Boom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat (2017) presents rare footage of the young artist and tells a story of a New York City that may be unrecognizable to some. A part of the ‘70s scene, Director Sarah Driver worked collaboratively with Jim Jarmusch, Fab Five Freddy, Kenny Scharf, and Alexis Adler to tell this intimate story. The screening will be preceded by a short introduction from CAM Executive Director Lisa Melandri. This St. Louis premiere is presented in partnership with St. Louis International Film Festival.

Join Tamara H. Schenkenberg, curator at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation, and Monika Weiss, New York-based artist and associate professor at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, for a screening and discussion of three short films by Mona Hatoum: "Don’t smile you’re on camera!" (1980), "Roadworks" (1985), and "Measures of Distance" (1988). The conversation will also include a response by Weiss, focusing on her own work, as well as an examination of other contemporary women artists working with body, memory, and public space. Site-Specific: A History of the Mattress Factory (97 minutes)

Through a mix of stories and anecdotes, archival installation footage, and interviews with artists and co-directors Barbara Luderowski and Michael Olijnyk, "Site-Specific: A History of the Mattress Factory" presents an in-depth look at one of the first site-specific museums in the United States. 

Founded in 1977 in Pittsburgh, PA, the Mattress Factory is a contemporary art museum and experimental lab featuring site-specific installations created by artists in residence from around the world. Starting as a quirky, anything goes food co-op and artist studio space, the museum created a program of artist residencies in 1982 to focus on site-specific installation art and they never looked back.

Cutting between the installation of the museum’s 40th anniversary exhibition and the museum’s long history of exhibiting experimental art, the film provides an intimate, sometimes humorous, look at the indirect path a museum takes as it creates its identity.

The film features interviews with artists Ann Hamilton, Sarah Oppenheimer, Vanessa German, Dennis Maher, Kevin Clancy, and David Pohl, and rare archival installation footage of James Turrell, Yayoi Kusama, Meg Webster, David Ellis, as well as performance art by Chrome and others.

A Good Day to Be Black and Sexy is a 2008 film written, directed, produced and edited by Dennis Dortch. The film explores the subject of sexuality and relationships within the black community in this collection of six vignettes set in Los Angeles designed to shatter stereotypes about black sexuality.

Organized in conjunction with Mane 'N Tail.

The screening will begin at 7pm followed by a discussion with Black Cinema Club, Afrosexology and Cicely Paine.

The screening is free and open to the public. RSVP's recommended as seating is limited.

Join Assistant Curator Stephanie Weissberg and visual artist Sarah Paulsen for a screening and discussion of animated short films by women artists. Inspired by "Rough Cut: Independent Japanese Animation," this screening focuses on women directors, a historically underrepresented group in the film industry. The discussion will reflect on materiality and technique, the evolution of animation over the past century, and new modes of production and distribution in contemporary work.

Take a behind-the-scenes look at the fashion world with a series of documentary films highlighting iconic fashion designers and groundbreaking style movements of the 20th and 21st centuries.
