Organized by artist Clifford Owens, this virtual communion of Lone Wolf Recital Corps members and friends will feature unique presentations by artists Sherman Fleming and Jamal Cyrus and ICA Philadelphia Chief Curator Anthony Elms on their collaborations with Terry Adkins, followed by a guided conversation with the audience.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1965, Turner Prize-winning artist Susan Philipsz is best known for her works that explore the potential of sound—often including her own, untrained voice—to define space and its interaction with architecture. Created in response to specific spaces and their architectural, environmental, and historic contexts, Philipsz’s sound installations bring to life the meaning of the places in which they are sited. Paul Mpagi Sepuya (b. 1982, San Bernardino, California, lives and works in Los Angeles) has been selected for the 2019 Whitney Biennial. He has participated in residencies at Hyde Park Arts Center, Chicago, 2014; Fire Island Artist Residency, 2013; Studio Museum in Harlem, 2010; Center for Photography at Woodstock, 2010; and Workspace, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, 2009. Sepuya was the recipient of the 2017 Rema Hort Mann, Los Angeles Emerging Artist Grant. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions including at the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles; The Studio Museum in Harlem; Franklin Art Works, Minneapolis; and the Artist Institute, New York. Public collections featuring Sepuya’s work include Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; International Center of Photography, New York; Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; and the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh. Sepuya received his MFA from the University of California Los Angeles in 2016 and a BFA from New York University Tisch School of the Arts in 2004.

Join us for a casual conversation between Vincent Stemmler and Flood Plain co-director Liz Wolfson about Stemmler's work in "Armature." The event will also serve as a closing reception for the exhibition.

From the 19th to the 21st century, from trading posts to fine art museums and galleries, the masterworks of Navajo weaving have transcended time and space. Fourth Generation Navajo weaver, Melissa S. Cody will address how the Navajo weavings of today are much like those from the past in the ways they mirror the social and economic history of the Navajo people. Through sharing her own art practice, Cody will discuss how Navajo weaving has continued to evolve through exploration and experimentation with “lazy-line” patterns, color, and design, thereby creating new works that have surpassed the definition of “decorative arts.”

Join Beatrice Red Star Fletcher and Wendy Red Star, an intergenerational artist collaborative duo, for a kid-friendly tour of "Ruth Asawa: Life’s Work" and "Lola Álvarez Bravo: Picturing Mexico." In her practice, Wendy Red Star explores the intersections of Native American ideologies and colonialist structures both historically and in contemporary society. As a part of her collaborative art practice, Beatrice Red Star Fletcher leads tours for younger visitors. Rose Raft presents its annual exhibition featuring their Artists-in-residence Whitney Walter, Sarah Bohn, Tiffany Sutton, and Joseph Jesse Ovalle, November 17th at Flood Plain Gallery. The exhibit features work by two photographers and two sculptors all connected by their experience with Rose Raft and a quote by writer bell hooks. Come out and enjoy an evening of 2D and 3D explorations that will begin with drinks and conversation and end with a performance by Minneapolis musicians Waveless.  

Rose Raft was founded as an arts organization in 2015 and is dedicated to advancing two central missions. First, we are committed to promoting participation in the arts as both necessary and natural human endeavors that enrich our understanding of self and the world in which we live and exponentially expands our capacity for learning in all areas. Rose Raft is an artist and musician residency located 40 miles North of Saint Louis off highway 55 in New Douglas, Illinois. We provide a space for creatives to make, grow, think, and connect. Whitney Walter is an American photographer, she works with analog processes in medium format photography, using darkroom processes as well as integrating a digital workflow into the practice as well. She currently resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she is attending school for a degree in photography.

A native of Saint Louis, Sarah Bohn received her Bachelor of Fine Art Degree with a concentration in Sculpture from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Sarah’s artwork considers themes of trauma, recovery, violence, vulnerability and domestic abuse. She primarily works in cast bronze, and she also creates works on paper and large-scale public sculpture. Winner of the 2nd place Dennis DeToye award for the SIUE Sculpture on Campus program, Sarah has participated in numerous exhibitions at venues such as the Kranzberg Art Center, Art Saint Louis, and Cedarhurst Center for the Arts.

Tiffany Sutton has been photographing strangers, family, and friends for over 15 years. Originally, she dreamed of being a cinematographer for films. She began to photograph when she couldn't afford a movie camera. In high school and college, she studied 35mm, 120mm film photography; working in both Black and White and Color. With her current series, she will visualize what it is to be a “being”.

Joseph Jesse Ovalle is a multi-media sculptor who is currently attending Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville to receive his BFA with a focus in Sculpture. He participates in large, rotating sculpture competitions across the Midwest. Joseph’s current series reflects the relationship between abstract work and figurative objects and his materials range from glitter to bronze.

Waveless performs at 9:30 PM

Waveless are a band from Minneapolis, Minnesota that have been touring the DIY circuit of damp basements and abandoned warehouses for the last 3 years. Starting as a fast-paced punk outfit they have shifted into something that is still dense and buzzy, yet also melodic and melancholy. The trio take notes from bands like Hüsker Dü, Sonic Youth, and the Pixies, capturing the energy and sound of the underground as they reshape it. Waveless recorded their record As One More Folded Paper Crane at Rose Raft’s studio in 2016.

Much of the most important art in St. Louis is marked by a keen sense of site-specificity—attending explicitly to the social conditions that define the city and the region, engaging with the particulars of its neighborhoods and communities. The first half of the decade was arguably defined by celebrated placemaking projects and critical art-activism interventions. This summer saw a number of announcements about ambitious cultural initiatives on the horizon—the Chouteau Greenway, a new affordable artist housing initiative in Gravois Park, and the Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Public Art Challenge grant that St. Louis is a finalist for—all of which promise to use art to re-imagine and even re-shape the urban fabric. In this moment, with St. Louis poised between two intensive waves of site-specific art projects, this roundtable offers a space to consider site-specific art practice. How has work that engages the city shifted in the past decade, and why? What work is happening right now and what spaces of opportunity are emerging? How do local artists want to engage with the major projects that are coming and what independent paths are open?

Artist and curator Gavin Kroeber will provide introductory comments and facilitate a roundtable discussion.

This event coincides with G-CADD's opening of Exhibition #18. Critical Mass for the Visual Arts thanks G-CADD for collaborating, and donating concurrent use of the space for our event.

Critical Conversations is a program by Critical Mass for the Visual Arts that seeks to spark revolution in the St. Louis Artworld. We aim to strengthen vital connections between individuals, institutions, spaces and creative communities, and to set the stage for profound criticism and discussion on a wide range of topics. We inspire action through increased understanding, agency and accountability among creatives, administrators, academics and critics.

Bjørnstjerne Christiansen—one of three members of the Danish art collective SUPERFLEX—discusses the group's multidimensional practice and the video installation European Union Mayotte with CAM Chief Curator Wassan Al-Khudhairi.

Interdisciplinary media artist Hasan Elahi will deliver a talk titled "Overexposed" as part of the Public Lecture Series. Elahi’s work examines issues of surveillance, citizenship, migration, transport, and the challenges of borders and frontiers.

His work has been presented in numerous exhibitions at venues such as SITE Santa Fe, Centre Georges Pompidou, Sundance Film Festival, Gwangju Biennale, and Venice Biennale. His work is frequently in the media and has been covered by The New York Times, Forbes, Wired, and has appeared on Al Jazeera, Fox News, and The Colbert Report. Elahi has spoken about his work to a broad range of audiences such as Tate Modern, Einstein Forum, the American Association of Artificial Intelligence, the International Association of Privacy Professionals, TED, and the World Economic Forum.

Recent awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Alpert/MacDowell Fellowship, grants from Creative Capital, Art Matters Foundation, the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, and he is a recipient of a Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Award. He currently serves on the Board of Directors at Creative Capital and is Associate Professor of Art at University of Maryland.
