Monaco is pleased to debut "Mala Noche," a new body of work by artist José Guadalupe Garza. "Mala Noche" will open with a reception on Friday, January 19, from 7:00 – 10:00pm.
"Mala Noche" examines the visibility and invisibility of the Latin/a/o/x experience in the United States — its tensions, contradictions and complexities. Images of celebrities, “Mexican” food, album covers, and cleaning products are abstracted, blurred and arranged mise-en-scène to demonstrate ways in which the body politic and mainstream media villainize, marginalize, and idealize our collective and individual histories and culture.
"Mala Noche" takes its title from the 1985 film by Gus Van Sant and the fictional drug cartel that appears in the American television show, CSI: Miami.
José Guadalupe Garza is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and curator. His studio practice utilizes cinema and popular culture as conceptual frameworks to examine ways in which histories are continually constructed and reconstructed. Cinematic and historical events are conflated to create anachronistic narratives and spaces, in which viewers are confronted with issues of identity, representation, desire, violence, sexuality and consent.
"Mala Noche" will run through February 9, 2018. Monaco is open each Saturday during the exhibition run from 12:00 – 6:00pm.

WE’RE BAAAAACK!!!
Much like the poltergeist from the feature film Poltergeist 2, in person events are back! Because scheduling is scary enough, Silver Space is here to help. Behold, our virtual baby - The Events Calendar - revived by popular demand. Here you can find out when the next gallery opening is, where you can hear free artist talks, and even what you missed out on because you didn’t check the calendar like you should have in the first place. Shame!
If you have an exhibition, event, artist talk, opening, or something tangentially associated, email marinam@silverspacestl.com and we’ll do our best to get you on!
