Flood Plain is pleased to announce its next exhibition, "Enjoy Every Minute," a solo show featuring new paintings, three-dimensional collage, and works on paper by St. Louis-based artist Amy Reidel. Also included as part of the show is Reidel's poem "Enjoy Every Minute," from which the show's title is taken.
For the past ten years, Reidel’s practice has explored themes of crisis and disaster through the visual technologies of medical and climate science. With "Enjoy Every Minute," Reidel enters a new phase of her artistic practice as she turns her attention to the psychic, social and political valences of new motherhood. Informing this exploration are Reidel's reactions to ongoing cultural conversations challenging long-standing silences around sexual violence, patriarchal abuse and internalized misogyny. While still drawing on the imagery produced in the name of science, this new body of work is centered on the physical and emotional conditions of pregnancy, birth and feminine identity. Through the two- and three-dimensional works collected in "Enjoy Every Minute," Reidel reflects on bodily trauma and transformation and their relationship to one’s evolving sense of selfhood and identity.
"Enjoy Every Minute" opens with a public reception on April 7, from 6-9pm and runs through May 5. Open hours will be held on Saturdays 12-5pm and by appointment. Viewing appointments may be scheduled by email at director@floodplaingallery.org.
Bio: Amy Reidel is a St. Louis-based artist who has exhibited work nationally since getting her BFA from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and her MFA at The University of Tennessee. She has been a resident artist at ACRE (Artists' Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions) based out of Chicago, the David and Julia White Artists’ colony in Ciudad Colon, Costa Rica and at the Luminary Center for the Arts in St. Louis. She has exhibited work at venues including the Contemporary Art Museum-St. Louis, ACRE projects gallery in Chicago, Fluorescent Gallery in Knoxville and the Amarillo Museum of Art. Her work can be viewed online in the curated artist registries and viewing programs at White Columns and the Drawing Center in New York City. Reidel has been awarded Artists’ Support Grants from the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis and the Vermont Studio Center and in 2016 she received the Critical Mass Creative Stimulus award. Reidel is currently a faculty member at St. Louis Community College, Saint Louis University, and Washington University as well as Co-Founder and Board President of All the Art: The Visual Art Quarterly of St. Louis.
