LAB:D Wayfarer at MONACO

Lyndon Barrois Jr. and Addoley Dzegede of LAB:D aim to tell tales of travel and a universal existence in their latest show;

‘Wayfarer’, at MONACO. In Wayfarer, LAB:D present us with a series of sculptures varying in media and scale that convey a shared message all the same. We’re here, we’re alive, and we are all human. 

In every urban environment there are particular moments in time and experiences a person will inherently have that are very present in Wayfarer;Wellington (cone), andLA (turd) being some of the most overtly relatable examples, and perhaps inarguably unpleasant. In other works such as Brussels (sign), Tokyo (glove), and Sydney (leaf)the inanimate acts as a representative for the lively movements and energies that urban habitats possess.

 As a result of such successful visual representation, Wayfarer easily coaxes and challenges the viewer to expand upon their original notions and approach the dimensional and detail oriented work from a more concept driven and philosophical state of mind. 

Wayfarer is incredibly palatable and interrelated while maintaining a sense of complexity; one pleasant takeaway is that we will always have exceptional and diverse definitions of sign and signifier, and that we will likely still retain an unspoken universal language played out through real time reaction to the visuals of our surroundings. Wayfarer is something important to remember in our present realities, where we can all so easily feel disconnected from one another. Wayfarer manages to restore hope through playful and conceptually rigorous new works by LAB:D.
